“Done right once” is a motto many in the fashion industry abide by. After all, the sartorial world is a realm where having more work than time to do it in is central to its existence. Designing when there is little time for mistakes takes precision, skill and incredible foresight and since the inception of Margaret Howell career in the 1970’s her collections have been the epitome of this phrase.
Howell’s eponymous creations are waver in and out of a framework of perfectly cut poplin shirts, comfortably worn-in cotton tees & trousers, thick knitted sweats and sturdy outerwear. Created for functionality and with a tactility to caress the body, her pieces are imbued with a sense of everyday luxury.
“I’m not really into designing something just for a show or just for decoration. Design is about aesthetic and usefulness, I think.”
Refinement is key to the Margaret Howell aesthetic. With a subtle dedication to detail, she is renowned for her finesse and ease of wear. Of her designs Howell has stated, “I’ve always wanted clothes to be the way I drew them: relaxed and lived in, a natural look”. It’s no surprise that she is considered one of Britain’s most influential arbiters of contemporary style.
